thanks for your time mate i have a volvo 760 gle 170 thousand k,s it has done this twice no response surging then stops  can find nothing visibly wrong wait 45 mins to an hour car starts no probs drive as normal.where should i start to dianose problem thanks peter

Peter, can be a few things.  My initial thought is the air mass meter.  May also be the idle control valve.  Lastly you may be dealing with a temperamental Fuel system relay.  These are a few suggestions but ultimately the car would need to have a few tests performed.  Hope this helped.  Roger
