Volvo Repair: weak engine, fuel pressure regulator, volvo v70xc

Question
Hi, Mark,

My 98 VOLVO V70XC AWD Turbo is getting weaker engine now. When I pump the fuel, I can see the rpm going up but the power does not respond well(slower and weaker). This problem becomes more prominent when climbing a small hill-it used to pass it at 60mph at 2000rpm but now maximal 40mph at 2500rpm.

The mileage is 90k miles. No warning lights on. I just got oil and air filter changed but no improvement.

Also, the gas economy is not acceptable: 12mpg.

People said the problems could be lack of a tune-up, PVC valve, fuel pump or turbo gone.

Would you please tell me what parts should I check sequentially? What are the most probable reasons for these problems?

Thanks in advance and happy holiday.

John

Answer
JOhn, first check the vacuum line to the fuel pressure regulator, pull it off and if fuel comes out of the line or it's wet, replace pressure regulator. Second, I would check the EGR system for proper function. Lastly, put a pressure guage on the intake system and monitor boost pressure. If low, look for loose clamps on the turbo hoses and cracks or holes in the rubber boots especially going to the intercooler. HTH

Merry Christmas
