Volvo Repair: 2001 V70 throttle body software, independent volvo repair, volvo specialist

Question
QUESTION: The independent Volvo repair shop tells me that my throttle body needs cleaning and software should be updated.  Cost is about $190. Why is this so much? Is this software available to anyone or does the shop have to buy this directly from Volvo?  Can the throttle body be cleaned without updating software?
Thank you.

ANSWER:   It can be cleaned without the software update, but seldom makes a difference unless it's REALLY filthy. A condition that should not occur under normal operating conditions. The sofware is NOT available to anyone free, and even if it was you need the proprietary VADIS tool to update it.
  What is the symptom?

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: The symptom was a rough running engine.  Car has 93K, but is serviced regularly.  Mechanic said the engine had a "lunge".  Is cleaning just a band-aid? Should I tell them not to do it if the cleaning won't make much of a difference in the way the car runs.  Have only noticed this since much colder weather has begun.

Answer
Susan, without seeing it, it's really hard to give you an opinion. Cleaning the throttle body will not hurt anything. I'm just concerned it may be an unnecessary expense?
You should ask yourself, how much confidence do I have in these people? If you have been a long time customer with satisfactory results, I would trust them and let them go ahead. I would ask for assurance as to how confident they are that this will cure the problem. If this does not cure the problem, then what?
In all fairness, it is difficult to guarantee a one thing solution. You have to "start" with the obvious. After that is ruled out as a possibility, you can proceed with a deeper diagnosis.

If they are indeed a Volvo specialist and not "we work on anything", that bodes well for you. Just like myself, you see pattern failures over time and learn what cures them and what does not if you are paying attention.VBG
Today's vehicles are very complex and have more computing power than the Apollo moon mission did. It's not always cut and dried.
My concern is that "some" shops sell these cleanings as a service, but not really a diagnosis or cure. All throttle body's look "dirty". Duh, look at the job they do. But that does not mean it's a problem. This service is profitable and lower skilled techs. can perform them. IE: Jiffy Lube, Car-x etc.
My "gut" reaction is that a cleaning will do little, but the software upgrade can be very valuable. Contact Volvo and see if there are any service bulletins out addressing this issue. Please update me as to your results?

Mark
