Volvo Repair: 1999 volvo S80 transmision, volvo s80, 1999 volvo s80

Question
QUESTION: Hi Roger
i have a 99 Volvo S80 that i have had for a little over a year now. just tonight i stopped at a stop light and my car didn't want to move so i pulled off to the side and shut the car down and restarted it and it pulled off fine. so to me it seems like it happens when i hold the brake for a little bit. the fluid level is fine, what i want to know is if you think it just needs fluid and filter change or if the tranny needs to be rebuilt.
thanks for your time,
Andrew

ANSWER: Andrew, dont bother.  Trans failure is a common issue with that year S80.  Get a Volvo Remanufactured unit.  Do not go to AAMCO or places like that.  They ruin more transmissions than any other place out there.  You would think they would do it right since its a General Motors Transmission.  Roger

QUESTION: ok, now when you say to get a Volvo remanufactured unit are you talking about replacing the whole tranny? also where would i get and have a thing like this done? Volvo dealer? i know i got the worst year i could but i didn't know this before i got the car. but it was the right price. also could you give a rough price for a job like this? as i only paid $6,000 for the car i don't want to put alot of money into it.
thanks,
Andrew

Answer
Figure about 3500 installed at the dealer.  Im probably off with that figure because all dealers are different. Yes, I mean buy one from Volvo.  You can have Joe Schmoe install it but dont let them rebuild it.  You may want to cut your losses while you are ahead.  Trans has failed and theres more failures to come.  Its an endless pit.  Roger
