Volvo Repair: 98 V70 Timing Belt / Water Pump Replacement, water pump replacement, shaft seals

Question
Mark,

I have a 98 V70 non turbo wagon with 140k and I am preparing to replace my timing belt.  I also plan on replacing the water pump since I am going to have the timing belt off and exposed.  My question is, should I consider replacing the various cam and shaft seals as well?  Also, are there any aftermarket german water pumps that you would recommend?  One last question, when I replace the water pump, do you recommend a liquid sealant to be used with the fiber seal, or just one or the other only?  Thanks for your advice.

Answer
Ed, you are a smart man to do the pump at the same time. Do NOT forget to do all the pulleys too. Tensioner and idler(s). It is "best practice" to do the cam seals at the same time, but I rarely see problems there? Cheap insurance in my mind though. GMB makes good pumps.Do not buy a cheap one! Fiber seal and a very light coating of RTV. Smear it thin with your fingers and wipe off excess. Do NOT put a bead on it and squish it together.
