Volvo Repair: 2000 s80 service engine emission light, timing belt replacement, sensor values

Question
QUESTION: Hi Mark

First of all thanks for the advise on the timing belt replacement, everything is working fine now after a series of alignment of the cam & crank.
Lately, the service engine emission light came on after putting in gas. The questions are as follow:
Is there sensor to detect an escape of gas fume at the fuel cap area?
Is it possible that the cap reach its life span and needs replacement? don't seem to be part of the maintenance schedule for this item
Thanks

ANSWER:   Lawrence, glad I could help. You were pretty brave going after that belt yourself.
Yes, there is a sensor. If you fill the car while running, it will set the code. Yes, the cap can fail.

QUESTION: Actually have a ton of info. on the belt replacement before doing the job but got stuck as how much the shaft can be moved.
Is there a way to troubleshoot either one of the problems instead of trial-error

Answer
Yes, with a smoke machine that has a leakdown indicator. The system has to hold pressure for a certain amount of time otherwise the code will be set. Typicaly you hook into the evaporative system through a dedicated fitting and push smoke into it at very low pressure. Look for the smoke, and there's your leak. No smoke and holds pressure, test sensor values and replace.
