Volvo Repair: fuel pump, fuel pumps, fuel tank

My volvo is a 1990 740GL.  Are there two fuel pumps?  How can I tell if the pump or the filter is malfunctioning?

James, depends on which fuel system you have.  If you have a bosch system, then there are 2 pumps.  One under the car and 1 in the fuel tank.  Regina rex only has one pump in the tank.  You can hear the pump when you crank on the bosch system.  On the Rex system you would need a mechanics stethoscope to hear it in the tank.  Roger
