Volvo Repair: Gear box flashing lights, speedometer needle, volvo dealer

Question
I have a '92 Volvo 960 wagon. So far it has been a great car. From time to time, the button lights on the gear box flash (go on and off) between W and E. Plus the arrow light flashes on the dashboard. When this happens, the speedometer needle either does not work at all or bounces around the dial. The Volvo dealer said I need to bring it in when this problem is happening, but since it is an intermittent problem, I can't know when to make my appointment for him to check it out. Any ideas as to what's wrong.

Answer
It could just be the switch assembly for W and E, fairly but not extremely common. Try cycling it several times to see if it clears up. I do NOT think it's a transmission problem. It's normal for the arrow to come on when it switches. I do believe it's a control problem and not internal to the transmission. Possibly the trans. module, but unlikely.
