Volvo Repair: 100,000 m maintenance on XC90, volvo dealer, 2004 xc90

Question
I have a 2004 XC90 with 98,800 miles. I have been told that the timing belt must be replaced at 100 miles. Service dept. has quoted $1000.00 - is that reasonable or should I price around. Also, should I be concerned about the water pump and fuel pump; I have been told that they are difficult and expensive to replace. Thank-you!

Answer
Ingrid, No thats not reasonable at all.  It is true the Timing belt needs to be done but its at the 105K service.  Im assuming this is the Volvo dealer.  you should worry about the fuel pump only when it fails.  No need to change it if its working fine.  The water pump is a matter of opinion.  Personally if its not leaking, I wont change it but on the other hand, since everything needs to come apart anyway, its not a bad itea to do it while they are in there.  That should only add to the bill only about a hundred and a half.  Sounds like a rip off to me though.  $1000.00.  I know times are hard but no need for them to rip you off like that.  Roger
