Volvo Repair: A/C cuts out with acceleration and fuel leak, compressor clutches, volvo safety

Question
I have a 1996 850R wagon that loses a/c when accelerating hard and does not return until you shut off the a/c for a few minutes and then it returns. I was told by a Volvo dealer that this is a Volvo safety feature that transfers all power to the engine and should return to cooling but doesn't. What is causing it to not return to cooling status? Also, the vehicle leaks gas when full but stops after it is 3/4 full. It was taken in for the recall by the previous owner. Could it be the fuel tank gasket which is the area in which it is leaking? Thanks so much!

Answer
Michael, Sounds like that guy was just feeding you a line of bull.  Check A/C pressures.  Does it cycle?  We have seen compressor clutches that need to be reshimed because over the years it gets worn out.  The repair is to reshim the clutch but if your compressor is original, it might be better to replace the compressor.  As far as the fuel leak, I would have to look at it.  The recall was for the actual gas tank.  A fuel pump seal or actual pump unit is most likely the culprit.  Roger
