Volvo Repair: 93 Volvo 240 Camshaft oil seal, crank pulley, volvo tools

Question
I need to replace the camshaft oil seal, 93 Volvo 240. Could you give me any instructions and tips? I'm going to use the Bentley Manual, as a guide also.    Thank You.

Answer
Steve, pretty straight forward stuff but if  you are going to do 1, do them all.  There are 2 volvo tools that will help the job go faster.  The cam seal tool and the crank seal tool.  If the timing belt hasnt been replaced, it would be a good idea to change it as well.  Bentely is a better manual than haynes.  My advise is to remove things in this order.  Fan, shroud, waterpump pulley.  Now remove upper cover.  Now set the car up.  Timing marks.  Cam at about 12 oclock, intermediate cam at 3 and crank at 12.  you will see all the marks.  I hope you have air tools.  If not, another 2 tools will need to hold the cam spocket and then a tool to hold the crank pulley.  Once you have everything off, loosen the 15mm nut on the idler.  Use a prybar to push the idler back and put a pinpunch in the hole of the idler.  Remove the idler off the block.  Remove the 2 14mm bolts holding in the cam sprockets.  Remove back cover.  Now you have clear access to the seals.  Screwdrivers pop them out easy.  Use OE seals or Elring. We can go further if you would like.  Roger
