Volvo Repair: 1998 XC70 scheduled service, tensioner pulley, timing belts

Question
I'm looking for a list of what is needed for the 190,000 scheduled maintenance.  We are avoiding the dealership and whatever my husband can do he wants to do, but I want to make sure he's doing everything he should and not just changing the oil.  Just had my engine replaced at 168,000 because he forgot to keep up with when the timing belt needed to be replaced and the engine blew. His excuse is "my Toyota" doesn't need all this constant attention, and his "Toyota" doesn't have a timing belt. Deep down I think he's intentionally sabotaging my car so I'll get a "Toyota" but I refuse:) I was in the shop yesterday because one of my cylinders misfired and a wire was loose so they fixed it.  It was the first time I left the dealership with a bill under $100.

Thanks in advance,
Angie

Answer
Angie, Timing belts are a must Every 70K miles.  We use a kit that has the tensioner, Idler pulley and tensioner pulley included in the kit. All those pieces should be changed if they werent changed at the 140K service.  Tell your husband, Thats why Toyotas are throw away cars.  Most Toyotas do have belts or chains and one day when that chain goes, Throw away the car because it wont be worth anything by the time you spend all that money on it.  Your engine was probably okay.  The cylinder head is what needed to be repaired.  The valves bend when the belt breaks.  The 190K is a minor service.  The 180 would be the major service. Oil change, spark plugs, coolant, fuel filter, rotate, brake fluid, throtle cleaning, air filter, cabin filter, Trans fluid change only if you have been doing them in the past.  If you try to do it now with this many miles, the transmission will fail.   Hope this helped.  Roger
