Volvo Repair: 850 steering wheel replacement, center bolt, meaty portion

Question
Hi Roger, thank you for your time.

I have a 97 T5 that has the leather peeling from the sides of the steering wheel.  I bought a T5R wheel and can't find anything on line or in the Haynes about changing out the wheel specifically.  I would appreciate any help you might be able to offer.  I do a lot of my own work but have never pulled the steering wheel before in an 850.

Thank you,
Wallie

Answer
Wallie, All Haynes is good for is Toilet paper for birds.  Anyway, You need a torx 27 to remove the Airbag.  Turn the wheel to the side.  There is an access hole on the meaty portion of the wheel.  Do this on both sides.  Remove the bag slowly and unclip the connector off the bag.  Put that to the side.  Straighten the wheel and look at the pulse wheel. On the bottom of the steering wheel there will be screw.  Put that screw into the black hole section of the reel.  Don't not move the wheel now.  Take a 18mm socket and remove the center bolt.  Remove the wheel.  Normally you would mark the wheel to know where you would put the wheel back but in this case, put it on straight. Put everything back in reverse order.  Roger
