Volvo Repair: 94 850 gt, belt pulley, timing belts

Question
I haven't had a Volvo since my 240 and its 400,000 miles I put on it.  I am looking at a 94 850 GT with 144,000 on it and the engine lite is on.  I'll have it checked at a volvo shop but my question to you was "how were the 94 850 gt's?". Have to go a long ways to beat the 240's but were they pretty dependable?.
Thanks,
greg

Answer
Greg, nothing beats a 240 as far as reliability.  You should have kept the 240, that one was still new at 400,000.  The 850 is a great car but has its issues.  Mainly Air conditioning Evaporators.  Labor intensive and about 1000 bucks to repair.  Brakes were another issue but pretty much normal wear and tear stuff.  Timing belts are a must every 70,000.  AT 140k the belt, tensioner, idler pulley and belt pulley should be replaced.  Any thing else was mainly cosmetic stuff.  All in all its a pretty reliable car.  Roger
