Volvo Repair: 98 S-70 Volvo, clutch plate, genuine volvo

Question
QUESTION: A/C work great on a trip then stops cooling-still blows but not cold, turn off system for a few min. then turn back on and works fine, may travel two hours or more w/o any problem or may work for 5 min. then repeats problem. repair shop says all pressures good??? The a/c control unit just below radio gets very hot to touch but no flashing green light on the "on" button
Also my coolen temp. sensor need to be replaced, do i have to buy it form dealer or can i get it from internet volvo parts on line?

ANSWER: Jerry, What happens on these is the space between the clutch plate and coil gets spread out and needs to be reshimmed. Its a pain but it will keep you going for while until the compressor fails one of these days.  As far as the temp sensor, You can buy them online just make sure its a genuine Volvo part.  I have used other sensors and they suck.  Roger

QUESTION: Roger,
I forgot to ask, do I have to remove the compressor?
thanks
jerry

Answer
Jerry, if you were to attempt this, the compressor has to come down at an angle that you can acess the clutch. In this case, the 2 front bolts holding the engine frame has to come down.  Like I said, this isnt something that I think you should leave to a Volvo shop.  Roger
