Volvo Repair: when to say goodbye to my 93 850, front brake caliper, percent markup

Question
Hi Roger,

First of all, I have to say how generous you are to take time to help all these online strangers out. It's great.

I have a 1993 850 with 150000 miles, and I love it! No dashboard lights, drives well, turns and brakes fine. You'd never know that underneath, there's a lot wrong. The dealer says right lower engine mount is worn, right front brake caliper is frozen, exhaust needs "extensive" work. Firestone says both front brakes are 95% gone they may need rotors too. Then I observe that it runs out of oil 4-6 months after changing, and a knocking noise over bumps from back tire only when no backseat passengers are present. And apparently, the airbags might need replacing due to being 15 years old.

I'd like to drive it until it's unsafe to do so, and I'm only willing to put in another $400 max because of all the work it needs. If it drives great and seems to brake well, is there anything I should be concerned about? For instance, is the motor going to come loose and be dangerous? Is the back wheel going to fall off or something? Will the airbag explode on me? When will the brakes stop being effective?

I know it's tough to answer, but I appreciate anything you can add. Thanks!

Answer
Andrew, first dont ever take a car to Firestone unless you enjoy getting screwed.  They are the WORST people to ever deal with.  They will sell you anything at 3000 percent markup. It is true that the airbags need to be inspected after 10 years but if there are no cracks on the seams, you should be fine.  The motor will not come loose because of that side mount.  You may be better off in trading the thing in while you are ahead.  From what you are telling me, there is about $2000 worth of repairs if you were to do everything.  If you still like having a Volvo and want a nice car that is inexpensive and new, check out the new C30.  If you dont a new car, a newer S70 will make you happy.  Frozen brake cailipers are never good so that should be your first priority if you are going to keep the car.  Roger
