Volvo Repair: 1987 Volvo 740 8 valve non turbo automatic trans, fuel pressure regulator, coolant temp

Question
282k miles, Car will start as normal after sitting (even for a week or more), run normally for 2 miles or 40 miles, with no specific pattern, and then stalls as if the engine has been turned off; sitting at stoplight, at freeway speed, whenever. Car will start again after 10 to 15 minutes. Starts as if flooded sometimes and as if nothing happened other times. Spark present, can smell fuel before and after stalling (running rich?) Just bought the car, past maintenance is unknown. Cannot hear tank fuel pump.

Answer
Bill, may be a fuel pressure regulator, ignition suppression relay.  A number of things.  I would have to perform a few tests to find out what is going on.  May be a coolant temp sensor issue causing overfueling.  AIr mass meter would cause this also. Roger
