Volvo Repair: 1989 960 Turbo sedan, laser lock, metal strip

Question
My ignition key suddenly won't unlock the steering wheel or turn the switch to start. The key is one of those that cost me $165 to duplicate and I was told it is a "security featured" key (also told it is a "laser" lock key). I am unfamiliar with this type of key but the key's teeth are the same on either side but a metal strip lies between (in the middle of the key. Is my problem the key or the ignition switch? What steps do I take to resolve this? Thanks.

Answer
Pam, like I said before and I dont know who is telling you that price but a good locksmith can duplicate that key for much less.  It is a laser key but not a security key like the new cars. Without looking at the car I cant guess and tell you what it is.  I have seen the locks go bad and I have seen the keys go bad.  You dont have a spare key or valet key somewhere?  ROger
