Volvo Repair: 1990 Volvo 240 DL, Sedan, volvo 240 dl, fuel pump relay

Question
Heeelp!
I own a 1990 240 DL Volvo Sedan and it is driving me crazy.  It will run fine for about 2-3 weeks and then all of a sudden it will stop working and won't start.  Sometimes it just dies on the road, without warning, so far it has started back on those times; but when it dies on my driveway, it takes days before it will start again, on its own, without doing anything to it (for a few days I would try to start it and it will crank but won't start at all).  Basically, I never know when the car will start and for how many days it will go with no problem Do they go through menopause, too?.  Is this a typical problem of that model?  I've heard a few stories by now that lead me to think so.  Please don't send me to a mechanic, I've been to too many already and it is quite expensive and they don't seem to find the problem.  Fuel pump has been changed, "kick back cable for transmission", computer, etc. etc.
Hope you can give me some useful advice - I need to at least make it run again before getting rid of it.
Thanks.
Mary

Answer
Mary, obviously these bozos that you took it too have no clue about Volvos.  What it sounds to me is a fuel pump relay or engine speed sensor.   The 240 is by far the best Volvo ever made.  There really isnt anything I can tell you to check except those 2 items.  I would have to perform tests and see whats going on.  I can give you a reputable real Volvo shop if you tell me where you live.  Roger
