Volvo Repair: V70 Wagon - Front Suspension Repair, tie rod ends, genuine volvo

Question
Hi Roger,
I own a 1998 V70 Wagon 5 cylinder non-turbo base model(130k miles) that is need of front suspension repair.  I have experience working on american cars, although this is my first major volvo repair.  My front ball joints and tie rod ends require replacement.  In addition, my struts are also in need or replacement.  I am wondering on how to identify all the miscellaneous suspsension items that may require replacement (bushings, washers, etc)? I searched several part suppliers online and the list of parts seems never ending?  Any suggestions or recommendations in attempting this repair?  I plan on using genuine Volvo parts for replacement as I would like to get another 70-80k miles out of the car.

Answer
Ed, that car will go forever if you keep maintaining and fixing it.  What is probably wrong with the struts is the upper strut cushions.  You can inspect them by prying up on the upper plate in the engine bay.  Look with a flash light to see if its broken.  The ball joint is a one piece arm assmebly that is a pain in the butt if it gets stuck in the lower plate assembly.  Tie rods are pretty easy.  You need strut compressor tools and air tools to do the cushion repair.  Roger
