Volvo Repair: Suspected Fuel delivery Problem?????, sound description, meter test

Question
The last couple of days I noticed the odd time that when I'm driving my 1990
Volvo DL, and I push on the gas, the car hesitates for a split second, and then
goes.  I thought it was probably just my imagination; however, today, as I
went to pick up my son from college, I shut off the car, and restarted after
about 5 minutes.  It started for a second and then died.  I restarted, and had
to turn the key longer than usual to get it started, and then it idled very
rough.  Gave it gas, and it was still rough.  Started driving, and managed to
get home okay, but it wasn't running as lovely as usual.  Got home, and it
idled rough...by that I mean it (my husband's words via my sound description
over the telephone) was 'hunting'...irregular idle sound...if that makes any
sense.  Now, I'm a bit hesitant to drive it, as I feel it may leave me stranded.
Any suggestions, as I'm in a desparate situation , and my husband only
comes home on the weekends.  Thanks

Answer
Patricia, it may be an airmass meter issue but it may also be a fuel pressure issue as well.  I would have your husband perform a meter test by running the car and unplugging the meter.  If the car surges when its unplugged its okay.  When he plugs it back in and if the car dies, then the air mass meter is faulty.  Roger
