Volvo Repair: Shifting Trouble, trans fluid, thanks john

Question
Hi Roger,

I have a 1995 850 Turbo.
When it starts cold the car doesn't want to shift out of first. After a few minutes when the engine is warm it catches and then runs fine. This problem is far worse in the winter, as of course the engine is much colder.
Is this a problem with the trans fluid?
I had a mechanic who told me he didn't want to flush the trans because he thought it would possibly do more harm than good.
Why would that be?

Thanks.

Answer
John, I have seen this before and unfortunately its the trans on its way out.  I agree with the tech.  Ive seen that happen as well. Fluid that isnt changed, clings to internal parts.  When its changed and fresh fluid is put in, all things start loosening up and create funky issues.   Roger
