Volvo Repair: Pag oil leak on 1991 Volvo 940 SE, oil damage, high mileage

Question
Having noticed very small quarter-sized leaks of bright green fluid under my car this week, I took the car into my regular mechanic yesterday fearing that I had an anti-freeze leak which can never be good. It turns out the leak was not anti-freeze, but "pag oil" from a small leak in my air conditioning system. When a repair is needed, he always shows me the problem and the origin of the leak was very obvious. I opted not to spend the money for the repair as air conditioning is a luxury and the car does have age (16 yrs) and high mileage (220,000). My question is more how "pag oil" works. My AC is actually working fine right now and has been throughout the summer, but only after my son did a recharge on it. Since I'm losing pag oil, is recharging the AC replenishing the pag oil? If I don't get a repair on this, will it potentially do any damage to any other parts of the engine? As you can see, I don't know a lot about cars -- just enough to ask a lot of questions! Other than this AC issue, the car runs like a top and I plan on getting a bit more life out of it. Thanks in advance for your help!

Answer
The oil leak you are seeing will not damage your engine. If the ac system is allowed to run without the proper amount of oil, damage to the compressor can occur. The compressor is probably what is leaking. You can add refrigerant oil when you recharge the system.
