Volvo Repair: 1995 volvo 960 check engine light, brain cramp, 1995 volvo 960

Question
QUESTION: We have recently purchased a 1995 Volvo 960.  We changed the timing belt and replaced the tension bearings, water pump and fuel filter.  But my mechanic does not know how to reset the check engine.  Can you disconnect battery and it will reset?? Thanks for your time and look forward to your recommendations.

ANSWER: There should be two small black boxes marked A and B on the drivers side at the rear of the engine compartment.Put the lead attatched to the A box in position 2 and press and hold the button for three seconds. It will then flash a small red light a series of flashes like 2-3-2. Two flashes pause 3 flashes pause 2 flashes. Continue that process until a code repeats. Then press and hold the button for 5 seconds release and the light will turn off then on, press and hold the button for another 5 seconds

QUESTION: Thanks so much this really helped.  But we kept getting an error code for air intake sensor.  When we replace this we are hoping it is fixed.  But would the air intake sensor cause car to shut down and will it hurt to continue driving? We have ordered part but there is no Volvo dealer where we live and we are trying to get it driveable so we can get to Jackson Ms. to Volvo mechanic.

Answer
This part when defective can cause stalling, poor performance, and can even leave you stranded. If you continue to drive you may damage the caralytic converter and/or the o2 sensors. Sometimes the EFI control unit gets a "brain cramp" and won't allow codes to reset.Disconnect the EFI control unit, It is located on the passenger side floor on the right side behind the panel. Its not a permanent fix and I can't guarantee it will clear the fault but its worth a shot.At least temporarily...
