Volvo Repair: a/c 1996 volvo 850R turbo wagon, volvo 850r, volvo chip

Question
QUESTION: Hi, after reading all your ?'s, I seem to have a unique one.
My wife's car started out with a no cold air would blow from the ECC after it warmed up. Even when it worked it did not blow very cold and the lights blinked (indicating a fault somewhere) so I had more freon and some stop leak put in which fixed the problem for a few days.
Now is the weird part... The blower fan usually will come on first thing in the morning, or if the car is stone cold, or sometimes if it just wants to. But the compressor is always working and the hoses are sweating and you can feel a faint bit of cold air from the vents if it not too blazing hot outside. I've had the electrical system checked,
the compressor cycles normally, freon is holding ok... any help would be a gift from above!!!

ANSWER: Brian, unfortunately, you have ruined the A/C system by putting that stop leak junk in your car.  Most likely you are having a problem with the blower motor itself and the  resistor or one of the motors in the ECC system.  I would have the car scanned at a Volvo shop.  With the proper Volvo scanner, the A/C control system can be diagnosed properly.  Roger

QUESTION: Hi, and thanks for your quick reply. I understand what you are saying about the stop leak, except, the a/c still works!  It's the blower motor that is intermittent. Is only a volvo scanner capable of diagnosing this or will a quality shop scanner with a volvo chip do it? My brother in law will do this for free But i will need to drive several towns away, and Volvo is obviously pricey and summertime is a thin time of year for a teachers family. Thank you again for your service, you are a real blessing!

Answer
Brian, If he has a compatable scanner then it will work but now that Im thinking about it, most likely its just going to be the resistor and fan motor.  I have seen fans work one minute and not the other.  Best way to check it is to remove the fam motor and spin it to see how free it is.  The brushes may be really worn but still spins once and a while.  Roger
