Volvo Repair: 1995 Volvo 940, volvo 940, check fuel

Question
I have a 95 940 that I got from someone I work with. They had run it out of oil and thrown a rod. I put a used engine in. It starts and runs fine with no knocks or smoking. There is no check engine light on. The car clatters like the timing is too fast and misses at idle. It will idle smooth for a couple of seconds and then miss, idle smooth and miss. I feel like the timing may be so far advanced that it is causing the miss. I have been driving the car for a couple of weeks and intermittenly when it misses at idle it will die. Starts right back up. I tried the knock sensor off the old engine and no difference. It has been running better the past few days with less clatter and less miss but it is still there. I am ASE Certified Master myself but not familiar with Volvo. The idle will also hunt up and down as well. Where do I start? Thanks

Answer
There is really know way of knowing what it ran like just before it threw the rod, so there may be many issues to deal with. Start with the obvious. Check the timing belt gear positions and flywheel position.Check fuel pressure and ground connections at intake manifold. Pull all fault codes and reset. Check and adjust throttle body. Make sure the connectors for the air idle valve and the throttle body didn't get switched. Take it out for a short drive and see what faults come back.
