Volvo Repair: 1985 volvo DL245 random stall, fuel pump relay, volvo owners

Question
Hello Mr Patricio:
My 1985 DL245 has been exhibiting the same symptoms at the attached email for the last year.  As it hasn't happened when my mechanic has the car, he hasn't been able to figure out what may be happening.  In addition to the scenario Traci describes, my volvo always starts up again instantly if I just sit at the side of the road for at least two minutes.  (Fewer than that, the starter just turns over and over, and I usually have to remove the fuel pump fuses, wait another two minutes, then start it, replace the fuses, and drive away as normal.)  On a few occasions, when the engine cuts out as I going down a long hill, by the time I've pulled off to the side, I notice that the car is idling normally (without me having to start it), and I just drive off again.   Does this also sound like a fuel pump relay fault to you?
P.S.  Thanks very much for answering all these questions for so many volvo owners.

Question
I have a 1989 Volvo 240 Station wagon.  For the last 6 months or more it has been dying when I drive, I will be driving and all of sudden everything shuts down, all of the lights on the dash board come and it dies.  There doesn't seem to be any trend as to when this happens, it can happen when I'm driving on the freeway or when I'm stopped at a light.  Sometimes it will do it 3-4 times in 20 minutes and then other times it will go a week and not do it at all.  It also has a problem where sometimes the gas pedal doesn't work (I'm not sure if these two problems are related or not), I will push down on the gas pedal and it won't go.  I have brought it to a mechanic who had the car for a couple of weeks and couldn't figure out what was wrong, I called another volvo mechanic and gave him my past invoices to look at and never heard back from him, so I'm assuming he didn't know what to do either.  I love this car and would love to be able to fix it but this is getting really frustrating.  Any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

Answer
Alex, the 85 has a slightly different fuel system but very similar to the 89 fuel system.  If your fuel system relay is over 5 years old, then its time to replace it anyway.  Im leaning toward a secondary ignition problem like a coil that is getting too hot or something strange in the ignition control unit.  We can go further if youd like.  Roger
