Volvo Repair: Mechanic cant figure out what is wrong, help!, fuel pump relay, 1989 volvo 240

Question
I have a 1989 Volvo 240 Station wagon.  For the last 6 months or more it has been dying when I drive, I will be driving and all of sudden everything shuts down, all of the lights on the dash board come and it dies.  There doesn't seem to be any trend as to when this happens, it can happen when I'm driving on the freeway or when I'm stopped at a light.  Sometimes it will do it 3-4 times in 20 minutes and then other times it will go a week and not do it at all.  It also has a problem where sometimes the gas pedal doesn't work (I'm not sure if these two problems are related or not), I will push down on the gas pedal and it won't go.  I have brought it to a mechanic who had the car for a couple of weeks and couldn't figure out what was wrong, I called another volvo mechanic and gave him my past invoices to look at and never heard back from him, so I'm assuming he didn't know what to do either.  I love this car and would love to be able to fix it but this is getting really frustrating.  Any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

Answer
Tracy, Obviously they didnt care enough to check the usual things.  The Fuel pump relay is where I would start first, as well as the in line fuse by the power steering resevoir.  This is one of those cars that I would also have to perform and check a few things on.  A good Volvo Mechanic will be able to figure this out.  Roger
