Volvo Repair: 60,0000 mile check, cooper lifeliner, coolant tank

Question
QUESTION: I have a 2000 XC70 that is nearing 60,000 mi. Should I go ahead and get the
recommended service? I'll be using Martin Volvo in Manhattan. Do they have a
good reputation?
When they replaced my leaking coolant tank ($230), they said there is too much
engine pressure when hot. I never get a warning light. They quote $11,000 for a
new engine, when it happens.
ANSWER: Maureen, Thats pretty funny.  My father worked for Martin's for many years as a salesman. That is a bit steep for a coolant tank. The engine quote is ridiculous. The engine pressure is not too high.  They are a high compression engine so that is normal.  Just for curiousity, what do they charge for the 60k there?  To give you an example here in Florida its about 350 bucks.  Roger

QUESTION: $895!!!! Crazy! I called NJ and they charge $845. In VT it's $450-$500. But I
have to drive 5 hours (my son is there), and book 2weeks in advance.
I got a great deal on the car from a friend, but the service fees!
Should I skip the service and just do the oil change? It runs fine.
When do you replace tires? What kind do you suggest?

Answer
Maureen, its important to do the service but at those prices, that is ridiculous.  Do the oil change and replace the air filter.  The other stuff can wait a few months.  Tires are replaced when they are needed.  I like Cooper Lifeliner but in your size they had problems with them.  We like Kumho Solus for your car.  They are great.  Dealer service is costly.  Im sure there are Volvo master techs that have thier own shops in your area.  I would look in the phone book.  The only listings I have for New York are dealers.  Karp on Long Island are good as well as Volvo Ville.  Roger
