Volvo Repair: VOLVO 240 1992, volvo transmission, 1992 volvo 240

Question
The fluid level when car is warm checks out fine.  The car will not shift at all until the engine gets warm.  The engine just keeps reving up higher, so I have to drive it around the subdivision in first? (its an auto trans) until it gets warm and then shifts up to second. Then it shifts perfectly, with no problems as long as the engine is warm.  Then I get to work, park in the deck, go out after work and crank it up and have to drive around the deck until the engine gets warm and then the trans will shift, after that, no problem.  Does the trans have some sort of temp sensor, or a filter/screen that does not let enough trans fluid flow until a certain temp is reached.  The trans place I called wants to (of course) rebuild the trans.  I just can't see that when it performs so well after it warms up.  Should I just have the trans serviced, where they just drain and flush the fluid?

-----Question-----
I have a 1992 Volvo 240.  When the engine is cold, the transmission will not shift up until the engine is warm.  After the engine is warm the trans shifts fine with no problems.
-----Answer-----
Theresa, check the fluid level when car is warm.  I'm assuming you mean the car will not shift properly into the gears until its warmed up.  Roger

Answer
Theresa, I would try the drain and fill and see if it helps.  If not then it will need a rebuild.  Personally, I would try to find a low milage unit from a salvage yard.  These bozos at Aamco or these other transmission shops do not know how to rebuild a Volvo transmission very well.  Roger
