Volvo Repair: Valve Cover 850 TB 1994, cam sprockets, intake cam

Question
Rodger

I just installed a head I found yesterday and the camshaft now turn.  Its tight but you can turn it.

I'm still having a difficult time putting the T-belt on.  The prior owner left one of the bolts out on the T-belt Idler so he could slip the T-belt Tentioner in on the T-belt Tentioner Pulley.

I have the T-belt installed but can't slip the Tentioner in because there is not enought space.  I have all the slack out of the T-belt, I'm pulling up on the Tentioner Pulley with a small rope.

My engine block vin B5234T - 222216, it does not match my VIN on the title so the prior owner must have swapped out the engine.

I do not want to install the Idler Pulley with one bolt missing.  Any ideas on this one?

Do they make longer T-belts?

My Pulley sizes are 53mm I've seen some at 40mm but can't find them.

Clayton

I have three pictures but not sure how to post them!!

Rodger

I put the cams on the head without the lifters/tappets and there is a slight wobble on the camshaft when I push down on the ends of the cams.  I put a straight edge in the journals and it appears to be warped.  I know this is bad.

Can this be line bored or something.  I just had a valve job on the head and hate to junk it.  Maybe I should find a used head and swap the valves out.  A lot of work but its a father son project and I hate to give up.

To answer your questions on lining up the cams, I marked cam sprockets and the cams where the timing marks are.  I also noticed the end of the cams have a slot that is off center on the intake and exhaust.  When the engine and cams are at TDC, the slot on the intake cam is on the top half and the exhaust cam slot is on the bottom half.

Thanks again for your help and Merry Christmas.

-----Question-----
My son and I are rebuilding the engine on an 850TB that the timing belt broke on.  We have just had a valve job done and the machine shop also milled the bottom to level it out.  When we put the valve cover back on and torqued it to 13 lbs the camshaft is to tight.

We pulled the valve cover back off to see it there were any nicks or burs and saw nothing.  Then we checked the gap with a plastigage and it was around .003-.004 inch.  I pulled the tappets/followers/buckets/ (what every they are called) out and swapped the intake and exhaust to see if the intake camshafts was bent.  When I torqued it down it was still to tight. I could turn it but could not do so by hand.

The first time I put the valve cover on I used the chemical gasket from volvo and the intake cam was way to tight.  The second and third time I didn't use the chemical because I just wanted to test it out and the stuff isn't cheap.  I also polished the cam where the journals touch (machine shop gave me something to do it with).

Any help would be really helpful were at a loss!!!!

We are also having a problem with the Timing Belt it appears to be to short.  We can't put the Tentioner back on because the Idler Pulley is to low.  Any thoughts?

Clayton, pull up on the pulley and it will rest on  the plastic piece and then you will be able to get the tensioner up there.  Any time you have valve work done, the belt is going to seem tight.  How are you lining the cams up?  NEVER swap the intake and exhaust cams.  You are supposed to put assembly lube on the journals.  It will be tight.  You cant turn them by hand, it needs to be moved with your screwdriver.  These engines are high compression so it will seem tight to you.  you have to tighten the valve cover from the middle out. Put the cams on as you would be putting the timing belt on and make sure the crank mark is perfect.  We can go further if you would like.  Roger

Clay, Merry Christmas to you and this must have been blown pretty bad if there is a warp like that.  I would take the whole thing back to the machine shop and see if they can do anything with it.  There is something wrong there.  Slots sound normal.  Take care.  Roger

Answer
Clay, this is a tough one.  You need the correct numbers on the block and head so the dealer can give the right belt.  Cams and crank MUST be dead on.  It will be tight to get the belt on.  take the tensioner out.  Let the pulley rest on top of the plastic piece.  Put the belt on with tension on the intake cam, then do the exhaust cam, water pump and pulley.  Now put the tensioner in an push up to get the bolt started.  Remember that you need to compress the tensioner and put a pin in it.  Roger
