My son has a 1987 dl Volvo sedan; we have narrowed it down to it needing a new starter (starter is not working, we can hear a slight click but that’s it).  The bottom bolt is reachable from underneath but the top bolt, that’s another story, how do you remove that bolt with it being so tight (no room)?

Dave,
You found out that removing the starter in a 240 is....challanging...
You must "Break" the bolt loose from the nut...then use a long extension with a universal to remove it quicker..from the bottom....use open end wrench to hold nut on top of starter..use strong box wrench to grab the bolt head end and put much muscle into loosening it..this is done while working from the top...OPTION 2...loosen 4 bolts on cross member holding transmission...lower trans with floor jack...making heaps of room to get the pesky bolt....

  Good Luck,

       Bilbo

Thanks for the info.  As far as I can tell there are no nuts, it appears to be threaded onto the starter, but I understand what you are talking about, it's not going to be easy.  Thanks again,

Dave

Answer
If you have a good floor jack....you can make this job much easier...loosen one side...unbolt the other.. the mount is easy to return to proper local...for reinstallation.
         Good luck,

bench test starter after removal...if its a mini sized one... you can use a bigger model...used in earlier years..better starter too.
