Volvo Repair: exhaust, maryland state inspection, volvo dealer

I have been told that I need to replace the mid pipe/flex pipe on my 2000 Volvo s40 1.9T that I just purchased in order for it to pass Maryland State inspection. The mechanic has told me the part will cost around $650.00. I have been looking online for the part and I cannot find a part called the mid pipe or flex part. Can you please explain to me what needs to be replaced and how much it should cost, I don't wnt to get ripped off but I have to repair the car to get the inspection certificate.

Amanda, before letting this clown charge you for this work, check with your Volvo Dealer.  Your emissions warranty may cover the cat converter.  We have seen a lot go bad and the dealer has warrantied the item.  If not, then 650 is about right for that thing.  Roger
