Volvo Repair: S40 fan control, climate control unit, volvo specialist

Question
Hello, I have a 2001 S40 volvo sedan.  Not long after pushing on the "air recirculate" button the air vent started to blow out air at the highest setting (5), even when the dial is switched to zero.  I have a single climate control (manual dial).  Last month I had an a/c health check and a/c system disinfection through Volvo factory service.  They are suggesting the entire climate control unit needs to be replaced at a hefty price.  I was hoping for a second opinion, like can the unit be recalibrated or a resistor changed. The a/c button and rear demister buttons still work. Thank you.

Answer
Cathy, they are most likely right, but without seeing and testing the car, I cant really help you in the diagnosis.  That S40 system is very temperamental and we have seen things from the sensors to motors and control heads going bad.  Do you have a Volvo Specialist shop in town or a short drive?  Roger
