Question
Thank you, I changed the sparkplugs in the Volvo today and the car purrs like a kitten. I will still have the throttle body looked at but in the mean time I have another question: How do I reset the SERVICE ENGINE light?

Question -
Good evening, I have a 2001 Volvo S80 with 56000 miles and it has always ran great untill now. I noticed that when the car is idleing at any time of day it idles up and then down. There is definitly a change in voltage because the headlights and interior dash lights dimm then go bright then dim and so on. Can you assist me with this problem?

Answer -
It is probably one of two issues:

1-The throttle plate is dirty.  The electronic throttle can adapt to the throttle opening getting smaller (because of dirt) but sometimes it can be too slow causing throttle oscillations like that.
2-The throttle module has failed.  It is fairly common for that car and it has an extended warranty for it.  10 years, 200,000 miles for that part.  Usually a check engine is associated with this fault though.

If there is no warning light, have the throttle body serviced to take care of condition 1.  If the problem persists you will need to take it to a dealer to verify or eliminate condition 2 as the cause.

Answer
follow these steps exactly to reset the service light:

1- turn key to position one
2- press and hold the odometer reset button
3- while still holding the reset button, turn the key to position 2 before the odometer resets to 0
4- hold until the service light begins to flash
5- realease after 3-4 flashes

If you continue to hold the button until it stops flasing on its own the light will not reset.
