Volvo Repair: idle problem 2001 S60, mass air flow sensor, mass air flow

Question
I just bought my 16 yr. old a 2001 S60 2.4 non turbo with 400k.  (I was told the miles were wrong the car dealer, but Volvo said they were accurate.)  It was owned by a salesman.  It runs fine when completed warmed up, but has idle surge on cold starts, appx 800 to 1200 rpn and sometimes shuts down.  The dealer (Patrick) replaced the timing belt and mass air flow sensor, and told me the converter was going bad.  The exhaust is normal, no unusual smell or smoke, and the car has great acceleration.  I've read about O2 sensor, fuel pressure regulator, and throttle problems, with similar symtoms.  I don't want to spend another $2k on a converter and find out that wasn't the problem.  I can change parts myself if it doesn't involve software.  Also, can you recommend a good suburban Volvo dealer. (Lisle)?   Thank you so much for any ideas.  Bob

Answer
Your most likely problem is with the throttle system.  The surging idle is the first sign of failure.  The warranty was extended on that piece but with 400k miles you are already past that point.  It will most likely need replacement or at least a good cleaning of the throttle plate.  The throttle body is one of those items that requires software though so you won't be able to replace it yourself.  I have been to lisle volvo twice before and from what I could tell it was a professional operation back there.  I would take my car there for service.
