Volvo Repair: Volvo s60 Locks, latch assembly, volvo s60

Question
My wife's 2001 s60 drivers door power lock is automatically unlocking itself after being locked. If you try to relock it, sometimes it will stay locked, other times it will unlock itself again.  Any ideas why, and if so is this something I can fix myself?

Answer
The door locks have a position sensor in them so that the door module can tell whether the locks are locked or not.  What happens is the sensor fails, and when you press the lock button it locks but thinks its still unlocked.  It figures the lock is jammed so it unlocks the door again.  The solution is to install a new doorlock/latch assembly.  To install it you need to take off the door panel, cut away the foam (at the adhesive, the foam needs to go back on), and then remove the door lock assembly through the opening.  You will have to transfer the cable and pushrods to the new door lock assembly.  And depending on the model/year you may have to remove the window guide.  It could block access to the lock assembly.  If you have to it will be bolted or riveted in at the bottom of the door inside the door jam area.  You remove it from the outside of the door.  It just slides in at the top.  No need to remove the glass to remove it as long as it is up.
