Volvo Repair: 70K mile maintence, timing belt tensioner, joe schmoe

Question
Hi,
My 98 s70 will have the 70K mile maintenance soon, I would like to ask when changing the timing belt, is it necessary to change the timing belt tensioner, pulleys, and waterpump?  Or they can be waited till the 140K mile maintenace?  I'm thinking of changing the timing belt at a local garage since its around half the price compare to dealer.  Do you think its doable because I heard that volvo has interference engine and it requires precise timing and special tools when changing the timing belt.  Thanks.

Answer
Alex, I wouldnt trust that car with any Joe Schmoe.  If that belt is put on wrong, then that motor will be damaged.  The 70 is generally just a belt.  If it has an auto tensioner then its not replaced until 140K.  If it has a manual tensioner, then replace it at 70.  We replace all the pulleys and tensioners at 140K.  The waterpump hardly ever fails so replacing that would be a waste of money.  Only replace it when it fails.  Hope this helped.  Roger
