Volvo Repair: Transmission, solonoid, pao

hi, my volvo is a 1991 740 automatic...non-turbo...i don't know what is wrong with the car but the rpm rev really high after gear 2 to gear 3....shouldn't there be a 4th gear for an automatic...? when i hit about 40+ mph it stays on gear three and rev up to 2600 rpm 70 mph 5500 rpm..and so on, it never drop down after gear three....

is there anything wrong with the transmission or
anything? thank you

Pao, yes there is an overdrive..  Push the button on your shifter and see if the arrow comes on.  Then carefully listen when the car isnt running but the key is in the number 2 position and see if you can hear a clicking sound on the transmission.  If not, then the solonoid is bad.  If after you replace the solonoid and it still doesnt shift into high gear then there is an internal problem inside the transmission.  Roger
