Volvo Repair: Brake pedal position sensor repair, david greenfield, volvo dealer

Question
James,
Thanks for the quick response. I will give it a try. I do have one more question.  My ABS control module was giving an error code so I have removed it to send for repair. If I drive the car with it out, will it cause damage, or will the anti-lock brakes and cruise control just not work?

Thanks,
David

HELLO,
I WAS TOLD BY THE VOLVO DEALER THAT MY BRAKE PEDAL POSITION SENSOR IS BAD. THEY WANT $215 TO REPLACE. IT IS EASY AND CHEAPER TO DO MYSELF.
THEY ALSO SAID THE CONTACT REEL NEEDS REPLACING.

THANKS,
DAVID GREENFIELD

Answer -
The contact reel you cannot do by yourself.  It will need to be programmed (its part of the steering wheel module).  Also you will set an airbag light replacing it and you can't clear the light yourself.  The brake pedal sensor you can replace yourself.  It is on the booster just to the left of the master cylinder.  There is a little clip ring holding it in.  Oull out the tip of the ring on the left side with a screw driver then work the clip off.  The new sensor comes with a new clip.  Then just remove the sensor and install a new one.  When you put it back together put the clip on first, then slide in the sensor.  It should click in.  Before you do any of this though, with the car off, push the brake pedal several times to release all the vacuum.  Otherwise, it will suck the o-ring into the booster.

Answer
Well it shouldn't cause any damage to the car.  It will set error codes for control module communication communication in other areas of the car so you will have to find a dealer or someone with the proper tool to clear them.  Ather than that it SHOULD be it.  I haven't ever tried it myself, and would not recommend it to anyone because of the inherent risks involved when driving on disabled brakes, so drive at your own risk.
