Volvo Repair: 89 240 Odometer, electric speedometer, ebay

Question
Hey Roger,

I have a 1989 240dl. when I bought it and was driving it home, I went to reset the tripometer and when I did that, the whole odometer stopped working. I took the dash apart recently and found that I have an electric speedometer and odometer. There is no cable from the tranny to the back of the cluster, but there are a lot of wires. Besaide the big speedometer unit there is and orange wire which is plugged in and another blank prong above it. There is a white wire with a red line on it and it is not plugged into anything. I dont know what any of this means, but i thought maybe it could help you decipher a problem. The unit is also sealed, so I cant see if one of the gears would be stripped, either. I know this is a common problem in these years, and I was just wondering if I needed a whole new unit, or if there was some kind of wiring problem. Is there anything I can do to inspect the gears myself? Any way to check for power or anything of the sort? Maybe I need a wiring diagram? Any insight you have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

Answer
Adam, you made the mistake of pushing the button when the car was moving.  You broke the little gear inside. Do not plug in that white/red wire.   That is for the tach and obviously your car doesnt have it.  The unit is not sealed, there are 2 screws holding the odometer motor to the gear assembly.  you can buy the gear separately.  you can find them on  Ebay.  Roger
