Volvo Repair: 1991 Volvo 740, clock cam, chilton book

Question
I had head planned smooth by Napa--(would they have somehow pulled the distributor out of the head and put it back in wrong?).  I put #1 cylinder, the one closest to me, to top, valve lobes pointed up--closed to #1 cylinder.  Rotor seems to be pointed to #1, down and right.  Crankshaft belt guide notch at 12 noon, idler gear dot at 4 o'clock, cam gear dot at 12.  Head is torqued to specs.  She turns over nicely, has fuel and spark, but will not catch/start at all--not at all.  Do you know of a better site/manual with information on how to set timing?  The engine ran before I did this work.  I wonder what is not right.  Thank you, Steve

Question -
1991 Volvo 740.  I replaced the head gasket, and cannot get the car started.  I did the timing according to Chiltons manual, but I don't think it is that clear.  I have spark and fuel, but no pop at all.  What have I done wrong or what trick is it doing the timing and timing belt gear alignment?  Help Please.  Steve

Answer -
Steve, good ol chiltons strikes again.  How did you put it back together?  Is the head torqued to factory specs?  Explain what you did and I will try to help.  Roger

Answer
Steve, there is no way to put the distributor in wrong on those.  The notches only fit in the cam one way.  Forget about the lobes being up like that stupid chilton book says. If you cam is lined up with the mark on the back cover  and the shaft mark is about 4 oclock and crank is 12 then you are on the money.  I wish I could help you more but without being there, there isnt much more I can help you with. Try turning the distributor with someone else cranking the car and see if it will catch.  I dont know of any websites.  Sorry,  Roger
