Volvo Repair: Volvo S80 Warning Light Over Voltage, volvo s80, 2001 volvo s80

Question
I have a 2001 Volvo S80 and recently replaced the battery.  I have had no electrical system problems to date and figured 5 years we the life of a battery.  Upon replacing the battery, I started getting "El.Powersystem Service Required" and "Over Voltage, Stop Safely" warning lights.  I did replace the battery with the recommended (12V) alternate version (not Volvo brand) and the car appears to be running fine.  Thoughts?

Answer
The occurence time with your battery replacement is a coincidence.  If you're going over voltage it can be only one of two things, the voltage regulator in the alternator is gone, or the computer signal to the alternator is incorrect.  The only way to tell for sure is to either replace the alternator or get a volvo dealer to do a read out on the computer to see if the computer is the source.  You'll have to take it to the dealer for that model because of the network design for the onboard diagnosis.  Most independent shops will not be able to read it correctly unless they are specifically volvo oriented.  Hope that helps.
