Volvo Repair: 89 volvo turbo wagon - fifth gear, velocity sensor, vacuum lines

Hello Roger,

For the past few weeks, there has been a problem with the shifting into fifth gear.  Although it seems to be a degrading condition, it is still intermittant and seems to be less likely if I have driven around for a while under 45 mph.  When I go directly from the office onto the motorway, it usually does not go into fifth gear.

I have tried releasing the pressure on the accelerator, to decrease RPMs and then reaccellerate, but no change.  I have not wanted to push the rpms too high...above 3000.  I remember that once or twice it suddenly shifted into fifth after having gone along at a high, strained rpm at about 60 mph but usually it refuses to shift up to fifth.

I changed the trans oil pan filter two years ago as general maintenance.  The trans fluid is clean and filled.  All of the vacuum lines are connected.  The overdrive appears to work...light goes on...trans responds.

Do you think that this problem could be due to a faulty velocity sensor?  And if so, where would such a part be hiding?

Thank you,

Jeffrey

Jeffrey, Its only a 4 speed Trans. If the arrow is on, its means that the o/d is off.  I confused on what you seem to think is wrong with the trans.  Explain more.  Roger

Roger,

Yes, I understand about the overdrive...I never turn it off (light is always off).  I don't bother with it.  Knowing that it is a four speed transmission...thanks to you...I will revise my initial explanation.  It is generally not shifting into forth gear.  If I drive around town before entering the motorway, then it will more likely shift into forth.  I wonder if the problem might be a malfunctioning velocity sensor/governor which is not permitting the trans valves to open properly.  What do you think?

I should also add, that since I have had the car...two years now, shifting into most gears is a little less smooth than I would expect.  The car now has 130k miles.  Two years ago, I changed the old and cracked vacuum lines but I could not find the exact volvo diameter hoses, so I used slightly smaller hoses.  But I don't think that this would affect the vacuum operation.  Anyhow, the problem with forth gear has appeared over the last month and half.

Thank you,

Jeffrey

Answer
Jefferey, Im glad we cleared that up.  Anyway, If the solonoid is working and you can hear it clicking in and out and the trans responds most of the time, then unfortunately it is an internal problem with the trans.  We do not rebuild transmissions in our shop.  Sorry for the bad news.  Roger
