Volvo Repair: 2000 V70 XC Ignition coils, synthetic oil change, volvo models

Question
Engine was running fine (wife driving) then all of a sudden started missing.  Bad gas smell out of the exhaust.  I diagnosed that my #3 cyl ign coil is dead (verified missing cyl follows the coil by first unplugging each coil and noting change or lack there of then swapping locations).  Car has 105kmi, orig turbo; always synthetic, oil change and filter today as part of diag are metal free)  Pls can you verify that in general, this is a normal part failure not a trend item for this model (unlike the E throttle control - argh!). Also Check E light came on (tho not right away - much later).  Assume I have to go to the dealer to turn it off after I replace the coil?

Thanks!  Cheers Mick

Answer
It is not a common failure but is not unusual for a car with that many miles.  It sounds as if your diagnosis is correct.  The check engine light will need to be reset at the dealer.  For the fee that they charge for that they should be able to verify your repair for no extra cost.  Those coils are used on ALL volvo models in current production so don't worry about it being like the Throttle body, I know how much of a nightmare those have been.  They have just recently released a bulletin on the throttle units stating that they are now warrantying that part for 10 years, 200,000 miles.  If you recently had one repaired at your cost you may return to the dealer with a receipt and try getting a refund (or partial refund at least). Hope that helps.
