Volvo Repair: 93 Volvo 960 Fuel/O2 problems?, bosch pump, fuel pump relay

Question
I have a 93 Volvo 960. Was experiencing considerable noise from the main fuel pump. Local shop (import specialists) replaced that pump, found bad fuel pump relay - replaced, bad pre-fuel pump in tank - it was replaced, and had a check engine light for fuel injector. Fuel injector 1 was replaced.

All ran well for a week then began experiencing rough driving/stuttering at normal speeds (50-60) and stuttering acceleration. It's as if it is cutting out. At the time this happened, i had just under a 1/4 tank of gas. Note: Also mpg went from 25 (normal) to 13mpg.

After adding some fuel, (to half a tank) problem ceased.  Any ideas?

In addition, after initial repairs, I still experience some whirring sound in the cab of car, from a fuel pump. Sound changes in pitch from time to time, and has started to stop whirring when i take sharp corners. Sound is not audible from outside of car. Any ideas?

Also check engine is still on, could not be reset for some reason. Showing a code for a bad 02 sensor and the fuel injector. Injectors are all working good, 02 sensor replace 1 year ago.

Thanks for your time and assistance.

Answer
John, sounds like the In-tank fuel pump has either stopped working or the hose that connects the sender to the pump has come apart or disinegrated.  Common thing on those cars.  What kind of fuel pump did the specialists put in?  If they put in anything other than a Bosch pump, you are asking for trouble. Aftermarket pumps are no good for Volvos.  Roger
