Volvo Repair: 1988 Volvo 740, volvo 740, shift operation

Question
Aloha,
I just bought a 1988 740 sedan with 180,000 miles on it. It has some electrical quirks to say the least!!!  The original problem was when you turn the key in the ignition the car started up, but the fan, radio ect..would turn after I tweaked the key a tiny bit.(Yesterday we had a big storm on the islands and I haven't driven it since before the rain.) Now when I turn the key the fan comes on but the car won't start it just clicks. So thats the main problem.  I have owned three volvos previosly so know to check the fuses...they seem fine. The other problem is the car has no 4th gear(relay?)I would love some advice...Mahalo!!!

Answer
Hi Sarah,
740's of your year DID have problems with electrical systems...sorry to say.
The problem with the key/start/switch could be a failed switch...I've never come across a failed switch that behaves as yours does. Before you get into replacing parts...get another opinion.
Your o/drive system has a relay...it's tucked into the mass of electrical stuff located behing the ashtray...if you can remove the board with all the stuff on it...you can drive the car and tap on o/drive relay see if OD light flickers...also check out wiring to trans. sometimes wiring to OD rubs and breaks(got to get into gear shift operation to find failed wire
If you have above average skills you can do these tests...otherwise get a competant repairman/woman to assess the problems.
              Good luck,
