Volvo Repair: Plugs & wires? Timing? Fuel Filter?, proper fuse, flame trap

Question
I have very few mechanical skills, especially when it comes to my volvo.  The odometer broke on the car in 95 with 185,000 or so miles.   It's a 1986 240 DL wagon.
My husband and i were on the interstate getting up to speed, when suddenly, somewhere between 55 and 65 mph the car lost power (didn't die, just didn't have ANY umph) and all the lights in the instrument panel came on.  I was in "5th" or electronic overdrive, whichever you want to call it.  Then engine was still running, however, so i put it in neutral and tried to coast for a minute...  no good.  I put it in 4th, and carried on.  Well, the same thing happened again, but now i can't remember what gear i was in.  My husband noted a strong smell of oil shortly before this when stopped, but when we checked, the oil was fine.
We limped the car home, and of course, no more troubles...
We have NO IDEA...
OH YEAH...  we just had a muffler put on this afternoon...  but it drove fine for several hours afterwards.
We have been having trouble with the flame trap not wanting to stay put...  but i thought we had that figured out.  We are also having problems with the fuel pump fuse (under the hood) blowing very very often.  I know this car is an electrician's nightmare, but i love ol matilda.
Please help
Morgan

Answer
Hi Morgan and Matilda..
If I were you...I'd replace the fuel filter and be SURE of what size fuse is being used...use proper fuse..
If fuses continue to blow....search for deeper answers...from a Volvo repair person..
Have flame trap looked at...and made secure.
                    Good luck,ladies
