Volvo Repair: Moaning Volvo, volvo v70xc, pitched whine

Question
1998 Volvo V70XC -- car has begun emitting a low-pitched "moan" upon cold start-up and continues for first 1-2 miles of driving. Then sound stops. It doesn't change pitch but does change volume of the sound as I accelerate or decelerate.  It's a low moan kind of like a whale singing -- it is not the high-pitched whine of the air pump. I can't narrow it down as to exact location. Doesn't seem to be hurting anything (yet), but it is an irritant. Any thoughts? turbo? power steering?

Answer
Hi Kahuna,
Many different items can emit a whine/groan...
         P/S..Turbo..alternator..pulleys..belt noise...transmission...and more..
You may further isolate the noise by...obtaining a 2foot piece of 5/8 heater hose...by locating the end of the hose over misc. engine parts...you'll be able to hear it WELL with other end in your ear....this really works.

OF COURSE YOU KNOW THAT YOU COULD GET INTO SERIOUS TROUBLE IF YOU MAKE A MISTAKE...HOWEVER. IF YOU USE CAUTION...YOU CAN FIND THE PROBLEM...LIKE THE PROS.

           Good luck,
