Volvo Repair: 740 dashlight problem, dashboard light, dash lights

I just purchased a 89 740 turbo wagon that the dashlights do not work properly.  When the key is on and the headlight swith is in the off position the dash lights come on and you can see all the gauges, but when I turn the knob to the park lights or headlights on the gauges are no longer lit up?  I have tested the connections and replaced the headligt switch without any change.  Do you have any suggestions?  Thank you!  Adrian

                     Interesting problem...My first thought is ...a headlamp/parking/dashboard light relay...Placed with many other relays it is easy to replace...be sure to locate the right one....behind the ashtray in the center console.
